Be a Booster!

Boosters play a vital role in providing athletes with a positive experience through their enthusiastic efforts. They support our team and athletes through donations of time and financial resources, which helps our swimmers succeed in and out of the pool.

Synchronized (artistic) swimming is a unique sport combining the flexibility of a gymnast, the endurance of a runner, the strength of a competitive swimmer, and the grace of a dancer. It requires dedication, hard work, and cooperation – skills that will benefit team members for life.

Team Structure:

  • NoVa Synchro consists of approximately 40 children ranging in ages from 8 to 18. The youngest swimmers practice five hours per week, while the most experienced swimmers practice up to twelve hours per week. Team members are registered members of USA Synchro and all meets are held in accordance with USA Synchro guidelines.
  • Synchronized swimming is a club sport with five paid coaches.
  • The NVS Board is made up of parent volunteers.

Competition:

  • NoVa Synchro competes in five to seven meets throughout the season, which runs from September through June.
  • Most meets are held in the mid-Atlantic area with upwards of 100 swimmers from Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.
  • NoVa Synchro belongs the USA Synchro’s Southern Zone, which requires some long distance travel. Last year the team competed at South Zones in Texas. The team is looking forward  to competing in the 2017 South Zones in Florida.
  • The team has also consistently sent qualified swimmers to the Junior Olympics, which has recently been held in Seattle (2014),  Greensboro (2015),  New York (2016), and  in Riverside (2017).

Expenses:

In addition to travel costs, NoVa Synchro members are faced with costs associated with

  • equipment (a $3,000 underwater sound system),
  • suits (synchronized swimming suits can cost up to $150 each), and
  • pool time (the team’s single largest expense).

This makes the sport relatively expensive for team members and may prohibit some interested children from trying the sport. In order to try to keep our costs down, we are seeking boosters to help make the team accessible to more children.
