Meet Bill May—The Pioneer Who Proved Boys Belong in Artistic Swimming

Proud Friend of NoVa Synchro

For years, Bill May was one of the best artistic swimmers in the world, yet he was not allowed to compete at the Olympic Games simply because he was male. Instead of giving up, he continued training, won multiple World Championship titles, and became a pioneer for the sport. His perseverance helped open the door for men in artistic swimming, and in 2015 he made history by becoming the first man ever to win a gold medal at the World Championships in amixed duet event at the World Championships.

It's not just about men. It's about any athlete who wants to feel included and accepted

Never say never

Bill's story is about much more than medals. It is about believing in yourself even when others tell you that you don't belong. It is about having the courage to pursue your passion, break stereotypes, and inspire the next generation to dream bigger. Today, boys around the world have more opportunities in artistic swimming because athletes like Bill refused to quit. Every boy who steps onto the pool deck helps continue that legacy. They show that strength, athleticism, creativity, and teamwork have no gender.
For parents, artistic swimming offers far more than a unique sport. It develops confidence, discipline, resilience, leadership, and lifelong friendships while building exceptional swimming ability, flexibility, coordination, and overall fitness. Your child won't just learn routines, they'll learn to set goals, overcome challenges, and become part of a supportive team that celebrates every achievement. The next pioneer could be standing on your pool deck today.

Every champion starts by taking that first dive—and NoVa Synchro, with coaches and mentors who have trained alongside pioneers like Bill May, is ready to help your child begin that journey. Whether your swimmer dreams of competing at the highest level or simply wants to discover a fun, exciting, and welcoming sport, this is where that first step begins. Why not let your child discover what they're capable of?
